The more convenient a tool is, the more casually it takes your customers' names, contact details, and appointments and parks them on someone else's cloud.
Shiftaru doesn't do that. This article explains why we chose a local-first design, how it works, and — honestly — what you give up for it.
It's a privacy story, but it isn't complicated. The whole question is: where does your customers' data physically live?

Most scheduling tools are holding your customer data
Cloud tools are convenient. But that convenience is built on uploading your customers' names, phone numbers, and requested date/time to the vendor's servers.
Here's the part people skip: when you hand that data over, you don't hand over the responsibility.
- A vendor's servers are a permanent target
- If they get breached, the people harmed are your customers
- "We used a big, well-known tool" is not an answer your customers will accept
So the convenience comes with a standing liability: for as long as you use the tool, somebody else is holding your customers' personal information.
Shiftaru doesn't send it — everything runs in your browser
The design is simple: the data you load is processed entirely inside your own browser.
- Customer and staff information you import is never sent to our servers
- It isn't stored on your device either — close the tab and it's gone
- Matching results come out as Excel / CSV files that live with you (you keep them)

A typical tool takes custody of your data and processes it. Shiftaru computes on your machine and hands you the result. That difference is the privacy story.
Follow the data — our servers never appear
Easier to see as a flow than to describe in words.

Customer responses land in your Google Sheet. Your browser reads it and does the math. The output goes into your file. At no point in that chain do our servers appear.
What you actually get out of it
This isn't a feel-good position. It has concrete payoffs.
- There's nothing on our side to leak
If our servers were attacked tomorrow, your customers' data isn't there. A breach of your customer data is structurally impossible. - The data is yours
The results are your files. Switch tools, cancel entirely — nothing is held hostage. - Explaining it to customers is easy
You can say, truthfully: "Your information is not stored with any third-party service." - Compliance gets lighter
No third-party processor holding personal data means a much simpler story.
The trade-offs, stated plainly
Local-first isn't free. Not uploading has real costs.
- No automatic sync across devices. That's the direct consequence of not storing anything in the cloud. → You move data as files.
- You have to save and manage the results yourself. → Shiftaru automatically exports the full booking list to CSV every time you confirm a schedule. Keep those files.
- No cloud backup. → You need a habit of not losing files.
Every one of those inconveniences is the flip side of the same promise: your customers' data is never handed to anyone. Convenience or privacy — Shiftaru lets you choose the second one with your eyes open.
Wrapping up
- Most tools trade convenience for custody of your customer data
- Shiftaru sends nothing: computed in the browser, results in your files
- The price is no auto-sync and no cloud backup — an honest trade-off
- Local-first isn't a limitation. It's the design.
Not holding your customers' data is the most reliable privacy measure there is. Stronger than "we won't leak it": we never had it.
